introduction
imagine you are just doing your daily chores, and suddenly you spot an extremely fat person. what is your first thought? what do you feel towards him or her? imagine that you would need to talk to this person, or actually have to serve this person food. fat people, some people think, are weak and lazy; are stupid for getting so fat and will never be good at anything but eating. or will they?
or maybe you are fat yourself and have grown accustomed to those fat-shaming people around you. maybe you are angry with them, or worse: you agree with them.
in a world that often demonizes larger people and idealizes thin and slender people, it’s hard to realize that these negative images of fat people are invented by people who need an easy scapegoat for their own problems. the waitress in this story notices this as she serves one of the fattest customers she ever had in the restaurant she works in. everyone around her talks very mean about this customer, which makes her feel sorry for him and feel bad about her own life; about how surrounded she is by narrow-minded people who only care about someone’s looks. of course, being too fat is unhealthy, but since when does someone’s body size determine how good a person is?
it is late on aslow wednesday, when herb seats the fat man at my station. this fat man is the fattest person i have ever seen, though he is neat-appearing and well-dressed enough. good evening, i say. may i serveyou?
rita, he was big, i mean, really big. good evening, he says. hello. i think we\’re ready to order, he says. he has this way of speaking—strange, and he makes a little puffing sound every so often. i think we will begin with a caesar salad, he says. and then a bowl of soup with some extra bread and butter, if you please. then the lamb chops, he says, and baked potato withsour cream. we\’ll see about dessert later. thank you very much, he says, and hands me the menu.
i hurry away to the kitchen and turn in the order to rudy, who takes it with a face. you know rudy. rudy is that way when he works. as i come out of the kitchen, margo says to me: who\’s your fat friend? he\’s really a fatty. now that\’s part of it. i think that is really part of it.

a little later, when i bring him more bread, he has finished his salad. you know the size of those caesar salads? you\’re very kind, he says. we don\’t often enjoy bread like this, he says. where are you from? i ask him. i don\’t believe i\’ve seen you before, i say. denver, he says. i don\’t say anything more on the subject, though i am curious. your soup will be along in a few minutes, sir, i say, and leave.

for dessert, i say to the fat man, there is the green lantern special, which is a pudding cake with sauce, or there is cheesecake or vanilla ice cream or pineapple sherbet. we\’re not making you late, are we? he says, puffing and looking concerned. not at all, i say. we\’ll be honest with you, he says. we would like the special, but we may have a dish of vanilla ice cream as well. with just a drop of chocolate syrup, if you please. we told you we were hungry, he says. i go off to the kitchen to see after his dessert myself, and rudy says: harriet says you got a fat man from the circus out there. that true? rudy, he is fat, i say, but that is not the whole story. rudy just laughs at his own joke.

so it was really going to see the doctor. doctor said: ok, you need to prepare for surgery tomorrow morning we’ll have a surgery. so i went back home. i didn’t eat. i didn’t drink. because the next day i arrived at the hospital and they were going to put me under some sort of sleep medication. they call it anesthesia. anesthesia and don’t try to spell that how it sounds either. it’s a very difficult word to spell out so i’ll help you out there. so anesthesia is spelled a-n-e-s-t-h-e-s-i-a and it’s the practice of medicine in the state of temporary induce loss of sensation or awareness. and that’s true. i remembered i was on that hospital bed. and the surgeon said: ok, i’m gonna put a needle in just to freeze your skin. i said: ok, no problem. i\’m not too worry about needles. they are fine for me.ok, i said ,\” oh that\’s it?\”and then another nurse came in ,with some sort of mask and said, \” okay just breathe e can breathe out… deep breath and breath out\” then i kind of fell asleep. i do not know what happened. but next thing, you know, i woke up in the different room. and i said, \”what is going on? and what\’s on my nose? \”and so the surgeon said, \”everything went very well. this is what you need for recovery ”and all that time that i breathed in through the oxygen mask.
and then i woke up, i’m back in waiting room. it took about three or four hours. i was just unconscious. i don\’t know what happened. but anyway, i went to stay for another hour. and then i went home and just kind went some rest. i start taking some medicine to help prevent the pain, and help to prevent the infection. that\’s kind of what i\’ve been up to all week. it\’s just kind of trying to get some work done. but at the same time ,it\’s very ,very difficult. because i usually wear glasses. now i can\’t, because this nose problem doesn\’t allow glasses to sit on the top of the casting. i\’m getting to send you nice picture. nothing is blood or anything. so you can see what\’s going on with my ugly face right now.
so i’m sorry that i’m keeping this week’s the free talk short.but i wanna know, have you guys ever went through something like this? have you guys ever had some sort of medical procedure? i know for the female listeners, you know, having a child is something like this too. it’s kind of a procedure where you have to get ready to go to the hospital, and then get to the hospital, and you have to follow the certain instructions of the doctor afterwards. so, if you guys have ever been through some sort of medical procedure like i just went through this week? leave a comment in the comment section below and i wanna read them. just so, selfishly, i feel better. because right now, i feel a little bit sad, a little bit hurt and a little bit guilty that i can’t do too much to help my family in this situation. because my actions can only be limited until i fully recover from this. so, were you guys affected by some sort of medical injury? or can you tell me about a time when you have to go to the hospital for whatever reason refers for a (friend) family member or a friend. what was that experience like. so give me your best medical stories. if there are any doctors listening to the program, we would love to hear from you too. leave a comment in the comment section below and i will read them next week.
speaking of comments, i’m going to read one from last week. sorry guys, i know i’m performing not as good as usual. i usually like to read a few more. but for this week i’ll just pick one random comment and read it. when my recovery is finished, next week, i’ll be sure to read many more of your comments. ok? so, this week’s comment is from liu hui, who says: hi nick, your magnificent story remind me of my favorite teachers. i also have two favorite teachers in my school days. one is my university teacher, mr. liu, who taught me the history of western philosophy. to be honest, this subject is very boring and obscure. but mr. liu was very humorous and he liked to put the principle of psychology(phylosophy) our daily life. besides this, he often made up some funny philosophic stories. all of us liked his class very much. hearing his fabulous stories, we were attracted by his class and never felt sleepy. he can make us laugh from the beginning to the end of the class. that is an awesome story. i know teachers\’ day was last week. and that is a very good reminder that it\’s not about the subject. it\’s all about the teacher. you know, if a great teacher, he or she can teach the most boring subject and make it interesting. and it will have a lifetime effect on us, that\’s for sure. so that works for anything friendship, parenting, teaching. it\’s not always about the subject. it\’s, most of the time, it\’s about person.
all right, guys, that\’s it for this week, thank you for hanging in with me this week. it was a ~it\’s been a tough week over the recovery. i really appreciate it. you guys, please leave a comment with your medical story. i\’m so sorry and wish me good luck for the recovery because i really need it. thank you for your support, everybody, and i will be back with my new nose next monday. so be sure to catch us next monday, same place same time. so long everybody, have an excellent week.
